Culture of Sekinchan

They way of life, especially the general customs and beliefs, of a particular group of people at a particular time.

People : The total population of Sekinchan is achieving 20,000 peoples in 2015 and 60% is Chinese, 30% is Malay and 10% is other races. 90% of the Chinese population is Teow Chew. They all live in four village, that is site A, B, C and Bagan.

Activity : Sekinchan is Chinese mean 'village suitable for plantation", the land and weather is suitable for farming of rice, fruits and oil palm trees. The main economy activities in Sekinchan are agriculture and fishery, while some are running small business and manufacturing. It is a fast developing tourist attraction, widely recognized as a famous paddy field instead of a fishing village.

Wishing Tree

Words of prayers, blessings and wishes are written from various races on the piece of red cloth and later thrown or tied to the wishing tree.

Joss Stick

After praying, the lady placed the joss stick to show her devotion to the deity in the Chinese temple. This custom of praying with joss sticks has been handed from generations after generations.

Fishing Village

Fisherman usually go out to sea as early as 5 to 6 in the morning and come back at 5 p.m. with their catch of the day. Their transportation is a fishing boat.

As photographed, the people are carrying out their own respective tasks and in the mean time, working together and united as one. A few of the fishermen are busy unloading and categorizing their fish catch at Fishing Village Sekinchan, Batam while another is weighing the fish in a traditional way. Two younger ladies are looking after the fishing village and at the same time doing accounting work, recording and keeping track of their fish catch.

Farming

The farmers are cleaning the roots of the paddy to ensure the healthiness. They have to repeat this act day by day before the paddy harvest.

The farmer sprays pesticides to remove the unwanted grass next to the luscious green paddy field twice a week. Motorcycle is their main mode of transportation to carry out their daily activities.

Market

Since Sekinchan is loacted along the coastal area, there are plenty of coconuts. The coconut farmers would collect the coconuts when it's ripe and sell it in the market. Fresh coconut water is a favourite drink of the people of Sekinchan due to the hot weather in Sekinchan. It helps to keep them hydrated and cool.

Kuih Kapit Making

The lady is making 'kuih kapit', also known as egg biscuit in a traditional way. All of the kuih kapit has intricate designs. This method is passed down from one generation to another. 'Kuih Kapit' is freshly baked daily as it is one of Sekinchan's specialty.

Market

As soon as the vibrant rays of sunlight begin to brighten up the day, people will go to the market to buy fresh seafood that has been captured from the sea. There are various types of seafood to purchase to satisfy one's appetite.

Helping Hands

Small business is a part of Sekinchan's main economic activity. The younger generation would lend a hand by helping their parents' store. This would help lessen the workload.

Paddy Processing Factory

This is one of the main local industries, that is the paddy processing factory. Rice is being processed and packed to send out to wholesalers. Visitors are able to purchase Pearl Rice, a special product in Sekinchan at the shop.

Sandalwood Incense Coil

Sandalwood incense coil is commonly used by the Chinese culture for blessing and praying. This would bring good health and wealth to them. It is able to burn for a period of time.
